Thyroid Disease - How it Affects Your Weight

Thyroid troubles are common and can be the reason for sudden unexplained weight gain or loss. Check your thyroid and talk to your doctor about any concerns you have.

The thyroid gland is incredibly important for regulating many of the body's critical functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight. It's located just beneath the Adam's Apple and is open like a butterfly across the windpipe.

Thyroid disease generally refers to having an over- or under-active thyroid gland. According to mayoclinic.com, having an overactive thyroid is known as hyperthyroidism. This condition ramps up the body's metabolism resulting in sudden weight loss, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, sweating, and nervousness or irritability.

An underactive thyroid on the other hand, known as hypothyroidism, causes a drop in metabolism. Women over 50 are most commonly affected by this condition which can cause obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease. Symptoms of an underactive thyroid include:

  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Depression
  • Pale, dry skin

Many of those with hypothyroidism take a medicine to increase their metabolism and restore function. Mayoclinic.com says that one to two weeks after starting treatment, you'll notice that you're feeling less fatigued. The medication will also decrease cholesterol levels over time and may reverse any weight gain.

Thyroid cancer numbers are on the rise, especially in women. According to Dr. Oz, the number of cases of thyroid cancer has more then doubled since the 1970s. It is 97% curable if it's caught early, so early detection is critical. Symptoms of thyroid problems may not be apparent right away but if you suspect a thyroid issue, talk to your doctor. Simple tests can determine hormone levels and most issues are easily resolved.
