Keep Your Skin Looking its Best this Winter

Over the winter months, it can become difficult to keep skin moisturized because of the dry, cold air. Skin can crack and begin to look like that of an alligator, so it's really important to step up your moisturizing routine to compensate for the dry winter air.

Today on The Doctors, dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban visits to share ways to keep your skin moisturized. She shows a winter facial that uses hyaluronic acid under pressure to help the skin attract and hold onto water. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar found naturally in the skin that is good for attracting water so the skin is plumped out and moisturized.

Many medical spas are offering winter deals to help protect your skin from the harsh winter weather. There are also many simple things you can do at home to keep your skin beautiful throughout the cold months.

Dr. Shamban also discusses using an at home mask to help infuse skin with greater moisture. She shows a mask made of avocado, jojoba oil, olive oil and honey. Dr. Shamban says that olive oil has polyphenols which are a great antioxidant. Honey also offers some antibacterial properties and avocado oil penetrates to the deepest layers of skin on top of containing vitamins A and D, making it great for skin. After applying the mixture to the skin, Dr. Shamban also wraps the area in plastic wrap to help drive the nutrients into the skin for maximum effect.

To care for your lips, choose a balm that has super moisturizers like shea butter or jojoba oil. According to SELF magazine, if you find that you're constantly reapplying your lip balm, chances are you're licking your lips or pressing them together, and depositing saliva. Saliva is bad news for the lips because it's acidic for food digestion, but dries skin out.

SELF editor Elaine D'Farley also says that drinking extra water won't help your skin stay moisturized. Rather, it'll just send you to the bathroom that much more often. She says that eating foods with healthy omega-3 fats like salmon or certain nuts.
