San Jose, the largest city in the region known as the Silicon Valley, has been described as the "Capital of Silicon Valley." The actual term "Silicon Valley" owes its popularization to the late Don Hoefler, a city of Santa Clara engineer and editor of Microelectronics News, who began using the insider's phrase in trade journal articles in 1971.
The high technology boom and silicon chip based semiconductor industry were born in Santa Clara County, Calif., around the city of San Jose during the 1960s. "Silicon Valley's" boundaries are generally considered to run from San Mateo to the north, the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west, San Francisco Bay/Diablo Mountains to the east, and Morgan Hill just south of San Jose.
