Although many people fear the process of aging and getting older because it signifies the beginning of the end of life, others dread this natural occurrence because of the toll it takes on the physical body. You might not be able to slow down time but you can reverse its effects on your face with the convenient mini facelift.
As a less invasive procedure, the mini facelift is ideal for patients wishing to see effective results but who are not ready for a full-blown surgical facelift. The mini facelift does not require local anesthesia (but it is available upon request), and the risks and discomfort are significantly less than the traditional treatment.
What is a Mini Facelift?
Since a mini facelift is what it sounds like, a mini version of the complete procedure, you might be wondering what exactly a mini facelift is and why you might choose this version over the more extensive form. When a patient wishes to improve the look of his or her face through removing wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin and other problems they typically have certain areas where they want to focus the treatment. In the case of someone with many problem areas such as the eyes, nose, chin, jowls, and more a full facelift would be required to achieve the results desired. However, for patients who wish to focus on specific areas of the face including the lower face or the jowls and neckline the mini facelift is a practical choice. The mini facelift primarily targets the lower part of the face. For other areas you might want to consider additional procedures.
How effective is the Mini Facelift and who are the best candidates?
A mini facelift is very effective and the results typically last five to seven years. However, since every person’s skin reacts differently to treatment, you can discuss realistic expectations with your doctor during the initial consultation. Furthermore, the effects are noticeable quickly so the wait time typical with other procedures is not an issue. The end results are natural in appearance thus giving you a convincing exterior you can be proud to show off to the world.
The best candidates for the mini facelift are people between 30 and 65 years old. Having good health is also important as this will help with recovery time and improve the longevity of the results. In addition, good candidates do not have extreme sagging issues. The procedure is most effective on patients with mild to moderate skin laxity. If you see the aging process is beginning to show years you haven’t yet experienced, then you can use the mini facelift as a perfect way to get ahead of the clock. This procedure works wonders for preventing problems before they become even harder to treat. The mini facelift is also great for people who do not wish to have a full surgical procedure but who do want results similar to those achieved from traditional surgical methods.
How does the procedure work?
When considering a mini facelift procedure you choose between to types of the procedure, or a combination thereof.
The first type is called the anterior mini and this one is for patients wishing to alter their lower face. After giving the patient a numbing anesthetic, the doctor will make small incisions in the skin surrounding the treatment area. The incisions are located in front of the ear and up the hairline. The skin is then gently pulled to tighten the area and then secured with deep sutures. Excess skin is removed and additional smaller sutures are placed in necessary areas. The whole procedure takes between 40 minutes and 1 1/2 hours.
The second type is called the posterior mini and this one focuses on neck and jowl area. Some people also refer to this as the "mini neck-lift." The process is very similar to that of the anterior mini. The doctor will make incisions behind the ear and along the hairline. Again, the skin is pulled tight and secured with deep sutures. Excess skin is removed and additional small sutures complete the procedure.
How long is recovery time and what are the risks?
Recovery time is usually a few days though some people experience longer recovery periods. It is important that you follow your doctor’s instructions during this time in order to speed the healing process and make sure your results are as good as possible. As with all surgical procedures risks are a consideration but the mini facelift is very low in risk. You can discuss your concerns with your doctor prior to scheduling the procedure.
