Mentoplasty (chin surgery) is accomplished by either reducing the bone or surgically adding an implant. This surgery is often combined with Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty) to maintain facial symmetry. The objective of mentoplasty is to sculpt the chin to form a more pleasing aesthetic look.

The male chin is typically considered to be masculine if it is a continuation of a strong jaw line (but not to the extent of Kirk Douglas chin). In women, a feminine chin is usually considered to be more retro-positioned.

Other issues that you and your surgeon need to discuss and consider before surgery include: Current shape, size and prominence of your chin; any dental or sinus issues (including an over or under-bite); your overall health and if you are currently smoking; possible side effects or negative outcomes.

Chin surgery is usually performed under general or intravenous anesthesia with the actual mentoplasty procedure taking only 30 to 45 minutes. There are several methods of performing the procedure, one popular form is with the incision in the mouth, hiding most externally visible scarring, this is usually referred to as the transoral approach. The actual implant is usually made of silicone or Gortex although there are other options in the marketplace. It may take as long as 6 to 8 weeks after surgery for the swelling to dissipate and the final chin contour to be fully visible and appreciated.
