Featherlift has similarities to the other non surgical face lift procedures known as Aptos Threads, Russian Threads, Curl Lift, Soft Lift, Silk Lift, BPS (Barbed Polypropylene Sutures), Threadlift and Gentle Lift. FeatherLift® is not currently approved by the FDA for any use and is still undergoing clinical trials. The material used for the threads is identical to the thread used for sutures that are left inside the body, which has been deemed safe for decades. A traditional face lift is extremely invasive and involves anesthesia, surgery, recovery, and great expense. A Featherlift takes about an hour and involves very little discomfort and zero down time. The threads made for the procedure are called Aptos threads, manufactured by Kolster Methods Inc. (K.M.I.). Aptos Threads are made of a material which has been used for surgical sutures for many years, and have bidirectional cogs or barbs on their entire length. While Featherlift does not produce the dramatic immediate effects of a traditional facelift, it greatly decreases the appearance of droopiness or saggy skin, and the results improve over time as collagen forms around the threads and the skin contracts. Doctors in the United States have been performing Featherlift for about five years, with about 80% of patients reporting that the threads are still holding tightly. Because the practice is relatively new, there is no long-term data on the efficacy of the procedure. The skin is properly cleaned and marked for the sites of thread insertion. The doctor will then administer a local anesthetic that is usually a mix of Lidocaine, epinephrine, saline, and sodium carbonate. A needle with the barbed thread is then inserted into the marked areas and pulled through, leaving the thread in the skin. The thread is then positioned and anchored, then cut at the skin and its ends are inserted beneath the surface. After you are anesthetized, the surgeon inserts a hollow trocar (a stainless tube with a needle-sharp end) at the specified entry points and through the subcutaneous fat along a specified plane. The tissue is dissected along this plane as needed based upon the individual patient. The exit point is then made and the APTOS thread is then inserted into the trocar. The thread is pulled through the other side of the trocar and the trocar removed, with the thread staying in place. The thread is positioned, tugging and testing its placement and finally anchored when the needed placement is achieved, the threads are cut just at the skin and inserted under the surface of the skin. This process is repeated as many times as necessary, and the treatment areas are usually taped to prevent movement. The average amount of threads used tends to be around 14. The procedure, in total, takes less than an hour to perform. Recovery time from this procedure is short, and normal, light activities can be returned to within an hour, but you are advised not to talk for the first day. For the first week strenuous activity should be avoided; i.e. exercise, excessive talking, shaving. There are usually few complications associated with the procedure, however, some swelling and bruising are typical and fade gradually. Some rare cases of allergic reactions have been reported. If any unevenness or disproportion is experienced, or threads become dislodged during sleep, they can be easily removed or repositioned by your doctor. In most cases, no scarring occurs. A candidate for this procedure can be anyone who is unhappy with sagging or drooping skin around his or her eyes, jowls, neck, or brow. This procedure does not produce as drastic changes as the traditional facelift and is not permanent; therefore, patients are sometimes younger or require only moderate rejuvenation. If you are in good physical and emotional/mental health, have realistic expectations, no serious health defects, have reasonably normal skin thickness and have the desire to rid yourself of loose sagging tissue of the face and neck, you may be a good candidate for a Feather Lift. If you are in the process of losing weight you may want to wait until after your desired weight is met. You may need additional lifting or skin removal surgery to alleviate excess skin after you have lost the desired weight.
