Learn more about your options for acne treatment by a professional. Anyone at any age can be a candidate for this procedure. Many of the treatments for acne available on the market today have been approved by the FDA for active acne and scarring. Your physician will determine how many treatments you require for the best outcome. For many acne sufferers, even just going out in public is uncomfortable. Maybe they are young and experiencing one of the many frustrations that coincide with adolescence or maybe they are plagued with adult acne that just will not go away. If you are prone to acne there are many options available to help treat and prevent this common dermatological condition. What causes acne?
In order to properly diagnose and treat acne, it helps to understand what happens to induce the condition in the first place. Natural bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes are present in the skin, and people with acne have more of that bacteria in their follicles than people without acne. Inflammation occurs when an enzyme produced by white blood cells damages the wall of the follicle. As the contents of the follicle move into the dermis an inflammatory response is triggered which results in red bumps, pustules, and nodules. Furthermore, the bacteria will promote formation of free fatty acids which cause additional irritation and inflammation. The key to prevent and treat inflammation is to kill the bacteria and imposes skin irritation. Several treatments such as Levulan Kerastick Treatment, Aesthera PPX photopnuematic therapy, and Smoothbeam lasers have shown to be effective in reducing the appearance and promotion of acne. Levulan Kerastick Treatment
The Levulan Kerastick is a procedure that utilizes a topical solution combined with blue light illumination using BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator. This treatment us typically used to treat pre-cancerous skin lesions called actinic keratoses (AK). It is equally effective in treating acne issues on the face. Levulan is a pain free way to treat moderate to sever acne.
How does Levulan work?
The Levulan treatment works in two phases. The first part includes the application of the Levulan Kerastick topical solution. The solution is put directly on the acne and AK. Once the solution is applied the lesions will be more responsive to the blue light part of the treatment.
The solution is left on the skin for 45 minutes to an hour in order to fully prepare the areas for the procedure. Next comes the blue light treatment session with lasts from 4-8 minutes. Mild discomfort can be expected but will be relieved completely within 24 hours.
Risks and Precautions
Discuss your personal health with your health care provider prior to undergoing the Levulan treatment. As a general you should not have the treatment if you have skin sensitivity to blue light, porphyria, or allergies to chemicals called porphyrins. Certain medications can change the way your body reacts to this treatment so make sure your doctor knows what you are taking and in what dose.
Side Effects
Common side effects include temporary reddening and very mild swelling. Redness usually dissipates within 4 weeks and swelling is reduced or gone by 1-2 days post treatment. You might experience scaling, tingling, itchiness, or slight burning during the treatment and for a few days to a few weeks afterwards.
Smooth Beam Laser
The Smooth Bean Laser is another option for removing acne reducing the appearance of scars on the face and back. Treatment includes 3-6 sessions performed at 3-4 week intervals. The one downside to this treatment is that the pain is noticeable so use of a topical anesthetic is strongly encouraged.
After treatment the skin will be red but this diminishes and skin returns to its normal hue within a few hours. In rare cases blisters and hyperpigmentation have occurred, so feel free to request a test treatment area before committing to a large area of skin.
