With the natural aging process comes natural signs of wear and tear, fine lines, and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. Uneven pigmentation is also likely to occur. All of these changes provide visible proof of the years many people have under their belts. Unfortunately, these life lines are often frowned upon by women and men who want to mirror the way they looked 20 years ago, before the unsightly wrinkles took hold.

Today's medical technology offers several procedures to remove wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin pigmentation and more. Using a laser to resurface the skin is one example that has pleased patients time and time again.

The Traditional Skin Resurfacing Laser

Also referred to as a "laser peel," the skin resurfacing laser is a CO2 laser that removes layers of unwanted skin. Instead of injections that cause collagen to increase and thus reduce wrinkles, the laser literally removes all layers of skin that are problematic. Some patients wish to use the laser on the entire face while others focus on specific regions. A discussion with your doctor will give you the background information needed to decide how comprehensive a treatment you need to get the results you desire.

Furthermore, many people use the laser in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures in order to gain full potential from each procedure. The skin resurfacing laser isn't a new technique, however, the results it is able to achieve has made it a must-have for patients across the country. The procedure can take from a few minutes to 1 hour depending on how large an area is being treated and how deep the treatment is performed.

Zapping Away Damaged Skin: How the Laser Works

So how does this laser work? A beam of laser energy vaporizes layers of skin. The depth and area of treatment is controlled with precise measurements so that only the damaged skin is removed. The laser is passed over the damaged areas and the surgeon stops the procedure when enough layers of skin have been removed to diminish the scars or wrinkles. Once the outer layers are removed, new skin below the surface is exposed. As this new skin heals it becomes smooth and tight, thus the patient has younger looking skin almost as though the wrinkles were never there in the first place.

Close examination by surgeons reveals that the skin treated by laser surpasses the results for skin treated with traditional methods such as dermabrasion and chemical peels. Depending on the needs of the patient, the laser can be limited to varied levels of the epidermis and reticulas dermis. Good candidates for the procedure are people who understand the limits that the laser can achieve. Natural movements such as squinting, blinking, smiling and chewing will cause wrinkles to return. Also, patients who have taken accutane in the past 12-18 months are encouraged not to have laser treatment.

Risks of the Procedure and What to Expect Afterwards

If you visit an experienced surgeon, it is unlikely that you will suffer from adverse effects. However, since each person's skin reacts differently to various treatments there is no guarantee that you will not have risks. Problems include burns, scarring and obvious lightening or darkening of the skin. Infections or activation of the herpes virus are rare, but a possibility nonetheless.

Mild swelling should be expected and slight discomfort is normal. After a week your bandage will be removed and your surgeon will instruct you on how to care for your new healing skin. Be certain to follow the instructions exactly or you run the risk of scarring and delayed healing. Protect your skin with sunscreen and be wary of makeup until the healing process is complete.
