There are many different treatments available for eliminating painful and ugly varicose weins. Not all doctors do all of the vein procedures listed below, but will discuss the advantages of each treatment with you if you're serious about treating your varicose veins.
Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy
This is an in-office treatment alternative to surgical stripping. With this technique, sclerotherapy is done with either a liquid or "foamed" sclerosant, while the doctor visually monitors the vein on an ultrasound screen. This enables treatment of veins that can't be seen because they are below the surface of the skin.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Ambulatory phlebectomy is a method of surgical removal of surface varicose veins. This is usually done in the office using local anesthesia. Incisions are tiny (stitches are generally not necessary) and typically leave nearly imperceptible puncture mark scars. After the vein has been removed by phlebectomy, a bandage and/or compression stocking is worn for a short period.
Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) EVLT performed with a Diomed 810nm laser is FDA-approved for the treatment of the greater saphenous vein. Endovenous Laser Treatment is a superior alternative to surgical stripping of the greater saphenous vein. A small laser fiber is inserted into the damaged vein. Pulses of laser light are delivered inside the vein, which causes the vein to collapse and seal shut. The procedure is done in-office under local anesthesia. Following the procedure, a bandage or compression hose is placed on the treated leg.
VNUS Closure
Minimally invasive method for treating varicose veins (superficial venous reflux disease), which affects over 25 million people in the United States. VNUS Closure uses ultrasound to map the path of the vein, then an anesthetic is sent through to numb the vein. RF (radiofrequency) energy is then used to shrink the vein, effectively closing it and causing the color and distended appearance to disappear.
Venacure - ELVS
It's not surgery, but rather a laser that targets the tiny area that is causing the varicose vein. The point of entry is tiny and doesn't even require stitches following the procedure. No recovery time is necessary since none of the surrounding tissue is damaged. ELVS is an outpatient procedure that takes about 45 minutes under local anesthesia, and isn't painful in any way.
