This past weekend, Hollywood debuted Breaking Dawn Part 2, the third and final episode of the Twilight Saga of vampire movies. The box office results were spectacular and as always, vampire related products are back in vogue including the Vampire Facelift cosmetic procedure -- named so because it utilizes a patient's own blood to maintain the eternal youthful look that vampires are famous for.
We were lucky enough to have a Q and A with famous Hollywood plastic surgeon and one of the co-stars of 3 seasons of Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, Dr. Paul Nassif.
According to Dr. Nassif, "The Vampire Facelift is one of the most cutting-edge, yet minimally invasive anti-aging procedures available. PRP is a natural rejuvenator that aids in the healing process and stimulates collagen growth. Iíve been using PRP in conjunction with surgical procedures such as facelifts and rhinoplasty for more than a decade with fantastic results."
How does Vampire Face Lift work?
Dr. Nassif: With a Vampire Facelift, we use PRP, or platelet rich plasma. To obtain the PRP, we take some the patient's blood and spin it down into a centrifuge. This will give us the plasma, which has the platelets in it. We remove and discard the red blood cells, and are left with a yellow serum that has all the growth factors. The serum has all the great factors of blood, plus the platelets, which stimulate everything to grow inside, such as the collagen, or angiogenesis. This makes new blood vessels and is great for your skin. You can then inject the PRP into the face, just underneath the skin. Over time, you can get around 10-15% more volume in your face, which can last a few years. It takes about 8 weeks to see. The procedure also gives you a better glow. It helps with your pores and your blemishes, and it gives you overall healthier looking skin.
While your cheeks are full from the PRP injection (cheeks will be full for four or five hours), we also take filler, and will put that in the cheeks and lower eyes. The filler is injected through the same little cannula (hole). The filler will remain for six or seven months. Overall, everything is performed in one procedure that typically only lasts an hour. The filler combined with the PRP treatment can really help improve your appearance and give you a younger and more rejuvenated look.
In what cases would you use Vampire FaceLift instead of traditional methods (like lasers or surgery)?
Dr. Nassif: The ideal candidate for a Vampire Facelift desires an increase in facial volume while improving the appearance of the skin. There is less down time with a Vampire Facelift then there may be with a procedure such as a laser peel, which is an attractive option for patients who need to get right back into their daily routine. However, a Vampire Facelift is a facial rejuvenation that will not help in the same way as a traditional facelift. When patients have issues such as sagging skin around their face and neck, we recommend a more invasive procedure such as a facelift or mini facelift to get the best result. Lasers will generally help with issues such as photo aging, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, scars, and minor facial wrinkles such as crow's feet, under eye wrinkles, and wrinkles around the mouth. During a consult, a thorough analysis of the patient will be made, and we will recommend the procedure or combination of procedures that will best suit his or her needs.
In what cases would you use Vampire FaceLift instead of PRP alone?
Dr. Nassif: The Vampire Facelift is centered around PRP injections; they are essentially the core of the procedure. PRP is sometimes used to address specific areas on the face. Sometimes the patient may have a small area that needs attention. In this case, their physician will inject PRP in areas such as under the eyes, or will use it to improve the appearance of minor wrinkles. The Vampire Facelift is an approach taken to increase overall facial volume. Although it is possible for it to address specific areas, its purpose is to improve the appearance of the entire face and leave the patient with a more refreshed and rejuvenated look.
