PRP Treatment for Hair Loss

PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a non-chemical, non-surgical way to enhance hair growth using your own body's powerful platelet-derived growth factors

Over the past several years, the use of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) has become very popular in promoting healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints; and more recently it has been used for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration.

PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a non-chemical, non-surgical way to enhance hair growth using your own body's powerful platelet-derived growth factors. Properly applied, PRP is painlessly performed in the office using local anesthesia in about an hour and has little to no restrictions or downtime post-procedure.

Dr. Alan Bauman, a board-certified hair restoration surgeon in Boca Raton Florida says, "while not a replacement for FUE hair transplantation, which permanently restores living and growing follicles into depleted areas, PRP is more like other non-invasive therapies which enhance hair production at the level of the hair follicle."

Dr Bauman describes his success with the treatment process, "At Bauman Medical Group, we've found that PRP when used with extracellular matrix (ECM), like BioD-Restore, allows the hair growth enhancement to be stronger and prolong the results for a longer period of time. Instead of every three to six months, PRP with ECM/BioD results can typically last from 12-24 months."

Who is the ideal patient?
Dr. Bauman: The ideal patient for PRP has weak, thin, partially miniaturized follicles left in the area of concern. The HairCheck measurements in the area of concern should not be lower than 50% of normal (control) area and the density should NOT be severely depleted. A significant number of weak follicles can be enhanced with the application of a "lunch hour" PRP treatment to produce increases in volume and coverage. PRP can be used in conjunction with other therapies like topical or oral prescription medications like Formula 82M Minoxidil or FinPlus Finasteride, Low Level Laser Therapy, nutritional supplementation and hair transplantation.

Any adverse effects or risks that patients need to be concerned about?
Dr. Bauman: The numbness and redness of the scalp resolves within 24 hours, but there is low risk of infection or disease transmission because the process is performed under sterile conditions using the patient's own blood. Results can be variable depending on the pattern of loss, genetic risk, health status, medications, patient's age, concomitant therapies, and other factors.
