Even though patient Pam Gamel, 49, works out diligently her stomach wasn’t getting any flatter, even after thousands of sit ups. Instead, it was a constant source of embarrassment. Gamel had Thermage done on her face and neck with great success, so she wanted to try it on her stomach.

She loved that no surgery was necessary and the related aftermath was also avoided. Dr. Scott Greenberg said thermage on the abdomen works in two ways -- rebuilding collagen and tightening the fibrous layer of the belly muscles.

Gamel’s hope was that her jeans would fit better because her stomach would be flatter, and the wrinkling in the skin that is common in the abdomen would also be improved. Unlike other treatments that require regular and frequent visits to the dermatologist, after one Thermage treatment the results may last for up to three years. That’s good news for busy women.

The treatment can be a little uncomfortable, requiring a prescription of painkillers if necessary. It can also be a pricy procedure, costing around $4,000. Some doctors are not so quick to recommend the procedure, but finding its use helpful in other areas that are more receptive to the skin-tightening application.
