Four Types of Rosacea
If you find yourself turning red in the face on a regular basis and it is not because of embarrassment or cold weather, you may be one of 14 million Americans suffering from rosacea. The Medical College of Wisconsin newsletter clues us in on the causes and treatments for rosacea...
The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases says that symptoms of rosacea include pimples, redness, and in some cases, thick skin. The face is the number one target of rosacea; however, in rare cases the upper body may be affected. According to Doctor Priva K. Young, an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, rosacea is a very common skin condition and most people don’t even realize that they have it. Dr. Young says that there are four types of rosacea. The first is called vascular rosacea. Vascular rosacea is characterized by flushing and redness on the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin. The face might be slightly swollen and sensitive to certain lotions and cosmetics. The second type of rosacea is an inflammatory form that causes papules and pustules to appear on the face and may appear to look like acne. Rhinophyma is another form of rosacea and most commonly affects men. This condition is characterized by a bulbous red nose, caused by an enlargement of the glands beneath the skin under the nose. The final form of rosacea is conjunctivitis, which affects the eye. There is no known cause for rosacea but seems to be the most common among Caucasians with fair skin. It is triggered by several different factors including heat, alcohol, spicy foods, strenuous exercise, and emotional stress. Dr. Young adds that what might cause rosacea to flare up for one person may have no effect on another. There is no cure for roscaea, but it can be controlled with topical or systemic medications. These medications are typically made up of low doses of antibiotics and are taken long term. For the most severe cases, where dilated blood vessels are involved, Dr. Young suggests laser surgery to help reduce the appearance. It is important to note that while roscaea can not be prevented, its symptoms can be eased by avoiding known triggers.
