Doctors Note That More Women Are Seeking Vaginaplasty and Labiaplasty

A new trend is emerging beyond the traditional plastic surgery procedures such as tummy tucks and breast augmentation -- Vaginaplasty and Labiaplasty

New York NY (PRWEB) January 31, 2009 -- A new trend is taking plastic surgery beyond the usual face lifts and "tummy tucks" and into a more intimate region: a woman's genitalia. Women by the hundreds each year are undergoing Vaginaplasty and Labiaplasty procedures, two newcomers to the growing cosmetic surgery field. Medical professionals note that this creates new opportunity -- and responsibility -- for them.

"We find that in some under-developed countries young women undergo vaginal procedures performed by members of their family or members of their tribe. Vaginoplasty is a surgical operation that corrects not only structural defects in the vagina but also cosmetically tightens the muscles of the vagina in order to tighten the entrance and make the vaginal passage smaller in diameter. In the procedure, medical professionals tighten the vagina by removing excess lining and then tightening the muscles and soft tissues surrounding it. By doing this, the medical professional restores the vagina to the state of tightness that the woman had before she bore children. This also tends to restore sexual stimulation lost due to the looseness.

Labiaplasty is also a procedure that changes the female genital area. In this procedure, the surgeon reshapes the woman's external genitalia, the labia minora or the labia majora or both. This procedure is sought by women whose labia are abnormally large or deformed or atrophic.

To give you an idea of how sought-after these procedures are, the American Society of Plastic Surgery says there were more than a thousand such operations last year in the United States, with hundreds more in the UK.

Dr. Colen says that many people consider tampering with the female pelvic area for aesthetic or sexual reasons, a taboo--but the numbers of those who object are not as high as they once were. "Today people examine everything and every part of their body. Today discussing the vagina is not such a taboo as it was years ago," she says.

Further, Dr. Colen points out that there are legitimate reasons for both vaginoplasty and labiaplasty. Vaginoplasty helps restore sexual pleasure that would not have been lost had the vagina maintained its original form; and labiaplasty corrects a physical discomfort that many women feel because of the size of the labia. Both procedures restore confidence, function and pleasure.
