Breast Implants Help Identify Victim

Jasmine Fiore was a beautiful young woman who was found murdered on August 15, 2009, despite her killer's best efforts to keep her from being identified.

Jasmine Fiore was a 28 year old swimsuit model and ex-wife of reality contestant Ryan Jenkins, who was the main suspect in the killing but was found hanged in a Canadian motel, an apparent suicide. Fiore's body was found in a dumpster in Orange County, California, having been badly beaten and strangled. The killer removed her teeth and fingers; which police believed was an attempt to hinder the identification process. Using the serial numbers on her breast implants , police successfully identified her body.

Serial numbers on medical implants, cosmetic and otherwise, are still far from standard. They are required on items such as breast implants and life prolonging implants, such as a pacemaker. The reason they are placed to begin with is for identification in case of a health scare. For instance, if it's discovered that pacemakers manufactured from one date to another have a defect, the manufacturer can track down all of the patients who have received one of those heart beat regulators and treat accordingly.

Serial numbers are not required, however on items such as lip implants or the screws used to hold a broken bone in place. Often, even if the numbers are there, there's no guarantee that one specific patient can be identified. There is a push within the forensic community to establish a database to standardize and track implant serial numbers of all types.
