Study Shows Breast Cancer Patients Not Receiving All Their Options

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is pushing for the power of choice in breast cancer patients who are candidates for reconstruction surgery.

August 27, 2009 -- In a recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), it appears that many women diagnosed with breast cancer are not given their full range of reconstruction options. While there was a 39% increase in the number of breast reconstruction procedures from 2007 to 2008, still nearly 70% of those eligible for the surgery are not informed of the possibilities available to them.

The key to resolving this problem, as suggested by the ASPS, is to include the issue of breast reconstruction in the diagnostic process rather than to leave it as an afterthought. Finding that you have breast cancer is frightening and filled with many often confusing choices. It is important to have a team of qualified physicians to assist in making both the decisions for treatment and reconstruction.

Dr. Sacha Obaid, medical director of North Texas Plastic Surgery, says it is key that "women with breast cancer be referred to a team of specialists including a breast surgeon, an oncologist, a radiation oncologist, and a board certified plastic surgeon. While the information presented may be overwhelming, it is critical that women know that they can be made whole again."

Dr. Obaid plans to increase awareness of breast reconstruction options through an educational push over the coming months. He'll be reaching out to physicians who specialize in women's care and the public through web and print media, as well as a lecture series.
