For those with a significant amount of weight to lose, liposuction hasn't been a viable option as it is meant for spot fat reduction. One California doctor seeks to change that concept.

Imagine getting the results from a year's worth of dieting in just one day. That's what a new procedure from Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Lloyd Krieger seeks to provide his patients.

Liposuction is best used for people who are in generally good health but have a few prominent areas where fat has deposited and is unable to be removed through diet and exercise. Therefore, lipo is not a weight-loss solution, rather a solution for spot fat loss. There is an option for large volume liposuction, but it presents a serious risk to patients because of the large shifts in fluid volume. Dr. Krieger is looking to provide a middle ground between these two options.

For select patients who meet certain criteria, Dr. Krieger will perform liposuction as a jumping off point for those who want to lose weight and embark on a healthier lifestyle. The ideal patient for this procedure is in otherwise good health and understands that the liposuction procedure is the beginning of a long journey towards overall health and maintenance of that lifestyle.

Dr. Krieger says that most patients do their part following surgery. "We find that most people who have had this sort of liposuction go on to lose more weight in the months following the procedure," he says.

There is a healing process involved after having liposuction so it is important to stay in close contact with your physician to monitor your healing.

For patients who are looking for spot fat reduction and body sculpting, there are several options available these days. There are different kinds of traditional liposuction, including tumescent lipo which pumps fluid into the body to help break up the fat before it is removed. There is also laser lipolysis, with many options such as SmartLipo and SlimLipo, which uses a laser to melt the fat before it is suctioned out. Also, there are non-surgical options like Zerona which heat the fat cells to the point of bursting and releasing the fat, which is then expelled from the body through the lymphatic system.
