IPL: The Cure for Sun Damaged Skin?
Through the natural aging process, exposure to sun, and other causes, the health of your skin can deteriorate, which can cause your appearance to be negatively affected. IPL is a treatment available to you to help repair your damaged skin and bring back that younger, beautiful look you want.
Why is my skin damaged?
The two most likely causes for damaged skin are natural aging and exposure to the sun. As we become older, the health of our skin begins to deteriorate and eventually the skin becomes more wrinkly and droopy. The skin loses its elasticity and appears to fall the body. Also as we become older, our bodies gain weight and the skin begins to stretch leaving embarrassing stretch marks. Likewise, overexposure to sunlight can damage the pigmentation and elasticity of the skin and can even cause skin cancer in very extreme cases, so it is important to take care of your skin to prevent serious long-term damage. What are some treatments that are available for me? Skin peels , laser surgery, fractional resurfacing and IPL are available treatment techniques to improve the appearance of your skin. Skin grafts can also be used for very extreme cases of damaged skin, but this is usually for burn victims or patients with wounds that are not healing correctly. What is IPL? IPL, or intense-pulsed light is a non-invasive treatment for damaged skin. It is a photo-rejuvenation technique that can help eliminate the signs of damaged skin without hurting the surface of the skin. The wave lengths of the light can range anywhere between 400 to 1300 Nm depending on the severity on the skin damage. Typically, IPL is used as a treatment technique on skin issues of the face, such as dark circles or aging spots, but it is completely safe and effective enough to use anywhere on the body. What is the treatment like? The IPL treatment procedures are fairly simple. The doctor begins by applying a cold gel to the damaged area, and you will be given dark sunglasses to help protect your eyes from the bright light. The IPL hand piece has a smooth surface made of glass, which is applied to the area so that the light pulses can treat your skin. You may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against your skin, but most treatments are completely painless. The IPL treatments are usually given in a series of procedures lasting up to six weeks. Each procedure is usually the same, but the range of the light waves can vary. How is IPL better than other treatments? First of all, IPL is one of the cheaper treatments that you can purchase on the market because it does not use expensive laser equipment or surgery. While skin peels or surgery may yield faster results, IPL is non-invasive – it will not puncture or tear the skin and has no dangerous side-effects. Other treatments can lead to long, painful recovery periods while the skin heals, sometimes leading to the additional cost of pain medication. IPL is straightforward and practically free of painful side-effects.
