8 months after the first facial transplant in the US, the doctors reveal the years of work and planning that went into making the life changing procedure a reality.
It was about 9 months ago, in December of 2008, when doctors performed the first ever facial transplantation surgery in the US. The doctors there recently published an article in the online version of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' (ASAPS) official medical journal, "Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery."
The article details the years of work that went into covering the techniques needed and the moral issues surrounding a facial transplant. Using cadavers and performing mock surgeries, they finally developed what they felt was an appropriate technique to perform the surgery safely.
It was Connie Culp, the victim of a shooting at the hands of her husband four years before who became the first recipient of the 80% transplant. She was left unable to breath through her nose, or eat or drink on her own after having several facial surgeries prior to going to the Cleveland Clinic.
The procedure would require some follow up work to complete the transformation in its entirety but the results were astounding. Connie was given a degree of freedom which she had tragically lost. The article will be published in the January 2010 issue of the journal.
On Tuesday, September 23, Connie will be featured on the Oprah Winfrey show to discuss her story of survival.
