VASER for Hyperhidrosis: Treating Your Excessive Underarm Sweating

For some people who sweat excessively from their underarms, it doesn't even need to be hot for the sweat to practically pour.

You've likely heard about using BOTOX to help curb excessive underarm sweating or hyperhidrosis, but now there is a permanent solution in Vaser, using ultrasound technology.

While the patient is under light sedation, the physician first injects some tumescent fluid into the underarm as the ultrasonic waves pass through the liquid more easily than through solid material. The waves are set to a specific frequency that is able to damage and kill the sweat glands and not surrounding tissue and voila, patient sweat is moderated.

The procedure was recently featured on "The Doctors" with sisters Ginger and Amanda both undergoing the procedure. They spoke of the embarrassment of excessive underarm sweating and how it limited their wardrobe. After the surgery, the sisters were able to wear long sleeve white shirts to the show and even under the hot lights didn't have embarrassing pit stains.

Dr. Pearlman Hicks performed the procedure and he explains that not all of the sweat glands are damaged as a certain amount is healthy, but the Vaser treatment does permanently reduce the sweating. It is an off-label use of the Vaser technology, but it does appear to be an effective one. The treatment is not for everyone, it's specifically for patients who sweat excessively. After using the ultrasonic frequency to damage the sweat glands, he then suctions out the dead tissues. It took only one stitch to close the incision so scarring is minimal. The procedure normally only takes about 25 minutes and results are seen in about a week. Dr. Pearlman Hicks is a plastic surgeon in Los Angeles, California who has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
