Know Your Choices for Weight Loss
On The Early Show's "Early Gets Down2Size," a mother of three shared her struggle with weight and tells how she found the right system for her.
Today on CBS's "The Early Show," Zuma Rosario discussed her massive weight loss, 104 pounds so far. She is a mother of 3 and at 39 she found herself weighing 230 lbs. After the death of her husband she knew she had to lose the weight to be healthy for her children. After trying several diets to lose the extra pounds with no success, Zuma decided to have lap-band surgery. The procedure is relatively simple; a band is tied at the top of the stomach so that smaller portions are filling. It does take dedication, if the patient begins eating larger portions the stomach can stretch back out and the pounds will return. Dr. Christine Ren joined her on the show to discuss the procedure and Zuma's success.
There are now several methods available for weight loss. There are physicians who specialize in medical weight loss who can recommend a healthy course of treatment to help drop pounds. Others prefer gastric bypass, another surgical procedure that forces the patient to eat smaller portions and thereby lose weight quickly. This surgery is typically reserve for those who have an excessive amount of weight to lose. There are procedures that can also shrink your waistline, without surgery. Zerona is a non-surgical laser procedure that can result in inches lost in only a couple of weeks. Treatments take about 40 minutes and you'll have to visit the doctor's office three days a week for two weeks. It is a new procedure so little is known about the long term effects. This laser only shrinks the fat cells, it doesn't actually remove them. There are also several liposuction treatments that can remove the fat and result in a slimmer appearance. These surgeries are not meant to be a weight loss procedure and are not for those who have a lot of weight to lose. They work best on those who have just a few trouble spots that they can't tone up despite proper diet and exercise. Laser lipolysis procedures melt the fat so it can be easily suctioned. SlimLipo and SmartLipo are popular laser technologies that both remove the fat and tighten the skin. Another variation on traditional liposuction is Vaser Liposelection which uses internal ultrasound to break up the fat before removing it. Body-Jet liposuction uses pulses of water to make the fat easier to remove. Unlike laser lipolysis which melts the fat, both of these procedures preserve the fat so that it can be reused in fat transfer. Consult your doctor about your weight loss goals and work together to decide on the best plan for your health. We of course always recommend adopting a healthy lifestyle. Exercise and proper diet are the key to lasting weight loss.
