Rhinoplasty and Mentoplasty - Contouring the Nose and Chin

To fix your profile, it may not be a new nose that you need, but a new chin instead.

Patients undergoing plastic surgery for their face have historically focused on the nose. Rhinoplasty remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures and many patients find it's needed to create a symmetrical, attractive face. As Dr. Mark A. Erlich, facial specialist and founder/director of Profiles & Contours, states, "when performed by a skilled cosmetic surgeon, [nose surgery] can provide a variety of aesthetic improvements, like reducing the size of the nose, removing a bump from the bridge, or reducing nostril size."

The nose tends to stand out when people look in the mirror, and many believe that a smaller nose can dramatically alter their face. While it is true that rhinoplasty can make a dramatic difference in your facial appearance, it may not be the only secret to achieving a pleasing profile. As Dr. Erlich says, “an attractive face often depends on more than just the nose.”

More patients are supplementing rhinoplasty with a chin augmentation , or opting simply to undergo a chin augmentation procedure alone, rather than rhinoplasty. In order to achieve a more pleasing physical appearance, your chin should be closely aligned with your upper lip, and should be slightly angular or even slightly geometric. A weak chin can create an asymmetrical look or make the rest of your facial features appear out of proportion, especially when viewing your profile.

A chin augmentation can resolve the aesthetic problems that result from a weak chin, creating a sculpted appearance and making both the jaw line and neck look more visually pleasing. A chin augmentation can even make your nose appear smaller, eliminating the need for rhinoplasty altogether. Chin implants are not just for women, either. Many men are opting to have the procedure since a strong jaw line can be viewed as a sign of confidence and masculinity.

A chin implant is inserted through the inside of the lower lip. There is no visible scar or incision, so the implant can appear completely natural. When coupled with optional cheek implants, the overall effect can be dramatic. "The classical standard of beauty is a triangular, tapered and geometrically angular face," says Dr. Erlich. Chin implants can be an important step in creating that ideal look.
