Breast Augmentation Gives Patients a Brighter Outlook

Breast augmentation can do more than just enlarge the breast; it can lift spirits.

Dr. Paul M. Parker, a New Jersey plastic surgeon, aims to improve the lives of his patients through breast augmentation procedures. Dr. Parker reports that, following a breast augmentation, over 90 percent of his patients report an improved body image. His patients also report that their interpersonal skills and relationship have improved as a result of the surgery, that they feel more feminine and feel better psychologically, and that, one year after the procedure, the surgery exceeded their expectations.

Dr. Parker runs a breast augmentation program at the Parker Center in New Jersey. Patients include women who have spent their lives self-conscious about their small breasts, as well as mothers or older women who are disappointed with changes in shape, appearance, firmness and/or size of their breasts. Most of the women who come to the clinic report feeling self-conscious about their appearance and some even avoid certain social situations, especially those involving a bathing suit.

Women who come to the clinic undergo a thorough evaluation process. They are given the opportunity to share their concerns about their breasts in the initial consultation, so Dr. Parker can customize a treatment plan to address those problems. He also explains the relative merits of silicone and saline and helps the woman decide which is best for her given situations. Parker’s patients then take their new breasts on a “test-drive,” wearing different size implants inside a bra and modeling in a tank top to see how different breasts will look on them. Photos are also taken of her with the various implant sizes, which she can access at home on a password protected website so she’s free to get advice from friends and family and peruse the pictures at her leisure.

Once a woman decides on a size, she’ll have an additional office visit for some pre-operation education on implants and to learn about the procedure. During this visit, she has the opportunity to reconsider her sizing choice and make sure she will be happy with the appearance of the new breasts. Breast size is one of the most important considerations in the appearance of the breasts, and Dr. Parker seeks to ensure women are satisfied and have breasts that appear natural and match their expectations.

The operation is an outpatient procedure. Women visit the Parker Center’s fully equipped ambulatory facility, and are put under general anesthesia. It takes Parker approximately one hour to insert the implants, and patients are able to leave shortly after waking up.

Under Parker’s Rapid Recovery program, patients recover from the surgery quickly and are able to resume normal activities within a few weeks. As Parker says, “A lady will present to us bothered by the appearance of her breasts. We can bring her to our operating room and with a relatively quick operation, we can re-shape and re-lift her breasts.”

Patients report being happy with their new breasts, but more importantly they are happier. Parker claims the augmentation procedure will help women "look better" and "restore…self confidence and self esteem." Women who undergo the procedure report being able to wear clothes they were unable to wear before. They feel more feminine, and this results in improved interpersonal skills. As Parker says, the procedure “really gives her [the patient] a new outlook on life.”
