Comparison Shopping: VASER Liposelection vs Traditional Lipo

Liposuction remains a popular procedure but it may need to move over for Vaser, a new technology using ultrasound.

Traditional liposuction has long been the remedy of choice for patients unable to eliminate stubborn fat with diet, exercise or lifestyle changes. Unfortunately, traditional liposuction has some disadvantages which newer technologies try to combat.

Patients who undergo traditional liposuction may experience significant pain as a result of their treatment; some have likened lipo-related pain to being hit by a truck. Blood loss was another common side effect to traditional liposuction. Finally, the results of traditional lipo were not always up-to-par, as the technique had a tendency to produce a baggy appearance in the skin in the area where the fat was removed.

The plastic surgery community has long recognized these limitations of traditional liposuction procedures. As Dr. Allan Parungao of Face and Body Plastic Surgery, PC stated, "traditional liposuction is good at removing unwanted fat, but it sometimes can result in a loose-skin look." Unfortunately, there were few other options for many patients seeking to trim down stubborn fats, so standard liposuction has remained the industry standard.

VASER, a new technique in liposuction, may remove some of these unpleasant side effects while simultaneously achieving better results with its revolutionary fat-removal technique. In fact, according to clinical studies pioneered by Dr. Paul Vanek, an Ohio plastic surgeon, VASER may improve skin-tightening after liposuction by as much as 53 percent while simultaneously causing 26 percent less blood loss than traditional techniques. These studies were presented in October of 2009 at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Traditional liposuction uses an instrument called a cannula to break up fat. The instrument is moved back and forth, cutting away the fat cells, which are then removed from the body. The back-and-forth motion does break up fat cells, however it also disturbs the blood vessels and causes trauma to nearby tissue. These side effects are responsible both for the blood loss and the pain associated with a traditional liposuction procedure.

Vaser, on the other hand, uses ultrasonic energy to break up the fat. There is less tissue trauma, and, according to Dr. Allan Parungao, the ultrasonic energy can actually help to tighten the skin as well. As a result, you experience less pain and perhaps increased satisfaction with the final results.

This new technique may make liposuction a more attractive option for patients unwilling or unable to undergo the physical toll of traditional lipo. As one VASER patient, a physician assistant named Karen, stated, "If it was a choice between doing nothing and doing traditional lipo, I would have done nothing."
