Chaz Bono is 8 months into his gender reassignment process. He is still undergoing hormone therapy to help change his body from that of a female to a male. The hormones have deepened his voice, as was obvious in his interview with Chris Cuomo on Good Morning America this morning.

Born Chastity Bono, daughter of performers Cher and Sonny Bono, was first introduced to the country as a cute little girl. In 1998, he announced that he was a lesbian which caused an uproar in the family, with mom Cher publicly disapproving. Over the years their relationship was repaired and earlier this year, he announced that he was beginning the process of gender reassignment.

We spoke to Dr. Gary Alter of E's "Dr. 90210" earlier this year. He is one of the few doctors in the US who is Board Certified in both urology and plastic surgery, and is a specialist in the field. He said there are different methods of female to male gender reassignment available. Patients usually take a regimen of hormone therapy which will cause "deepening of the voice, enlargement of the clitoris, and growth of body hair."

Some patients never go through genital surgery, but will undergo breast removal. Those with small breasts can sometimes just have liposuction to the breasts but those with larger breasts may need to have the skin removed as well. After the hormones enlarge the clitoris, some transsexuals have metaidoioplasty, which extends, strengthens, and releases the clitoris, giving it a more defined penile appearance. Phalloplasty is a procedure in which a penis is formed from skin taken from another part of the body and is then attached to the genital area. Female to male transsexuals sometimes choose to have a hysterectomy as well to remove the female internal organs.
