Plastic Surgery Experts Available to Discuss “Botax”

The nation’s leading plastic surgery experts of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) will be available to discuss the proposed 5% increase in cosmetic surgery tax.

Earlier this month, American Health and Beauty reported about the proposed 5% increase in elective surgical procedures, coined Botax, which Democrats say would raise $5.8 billion over the next 10 years towards the $849 billion estimated price tag of President Obama's health care reform.

The ASPS has called the bill "discriminatory, arbitrary and ineffective." According to a quote from ASPS president Dr. Michael McGuire, the aesthetic industry’s largest consumer group is the middle class working women of the US. 86% of elective aesthetic procedures are purchased by women. 91% of those are between the working ages of 19-64.

In response to the continued debate over the Senate’s recently proposed cosmetic surgery tax, some of the nation’s leading plastic surgery experts from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), will be available for interviews throughout the holiday weekend to discuss:

  • How middle-America will be affected.
  • Impact on patient privacy.
  • Proven ineffectiveness in raising revenue (failure in New Jersey).
  • Serious long-term implications of the government, not doctors determining what is medically necessary and thus exempt from such a tax.
  • Discrimination against women seeking cosmetic procedures.
  • How the plastic surgery community is fighting back on a grassroots level.

In addition, ASPS and its members would like to discuss other consequences that have yet to be addressed - including the dangerous possibility of compromised patient privacy and the patient safety.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons comprises more than 90% of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the US and represents more than 7,000 physicians. Recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, it is the largest organization of its type in the world.
