Don't Waste Your Flex Money - Use it for LASIK
Make your appointment for LASIK soon to save big bucks and use the extra money left in your FSP.
A new study has been released by the National Eye Institute showing an astonishing leap in the rate of nearsightedness, or myopia. Up 66% from the 1970s, more than 41% of Americans are nearsighted and require treatment. With the end of the calendar year quickly approaching, now is the time to book your appointment for LASIK Eye Surgery.
Most employers offer a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for medical expenses not generally covered by health plans, i.e. office co-pays, deductibles, over-the-counter medications. Since the money is deducted from the salary into the medical FSA, it is not subject to payroll taxes and the entire amount is typically available on January 1st. On the downside, this money is no longer available after the year is over and is essentially "lost." While for some the cut off date is December 31, others have until February to use their FSA money. While the medical FSA does not cover cosmetic surgery or procedures, it does cover LASIK eye surgery. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and by using an excimer laser, it permanently changes the shape of the eye. A small flap is cut into the cornea and folded over to allow access to the part of the eye called the stroma, where the laser is used to reshape the cornea and the flap is closed, thus offering a permanent solution to nearsightedness, or myopia. Take advantage of your medical FSA and book your LASIK appointment before the end of the year. Say good bye to glasses and contacts and wake up to a new year with fresh eyes.
