2009 Reader's Choice - Top 5 Minimally Invasive Body Contouring Brands
With the advent of new technologies, minimally invasive body contouring, aka spot fat reduction, specifically targets and breaks down unwanted fat cells. Whether you choose laser or radiofrequency energy, here are our readers' top five choices when it comes to trimming the fat.
Body Contouring has come a long way from liposuction. It used to be those brave enough to risk going under general anesthesia would also have to deal with long recovery times and potential unsightly scars. Well move on over liposuction, because there is new game in town and competition is fierce. According to our readers, here are the top five body contouring choices of 2009:
1 - SmartLipo: SmartLipo from Cynosure features a precisely calibrated laser that liquefies fat deposits through the layers of skin. A small incision is made and the laser is inserted into the body via a small cannula, or tube. The laser ruptures the fat cells and is then removed through the same incision. Since the laser seals blood vessels as it is liquefying the fat deposits, there is less bleeding, bruising and swelling. FDA approved, SmartLipo research has shown that little, if any, fat is reabsorbed into the body.
2 - Body Thermage: Thermage from Solta Medical uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deepest layers of skin, thus tightening existing collagen and promoting new collagen growth. Treatment typically takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on how much area is being treated. With no injections or incisions, there is little to no downtime and results can be seen within 3 weeks. 3 - Zerona: Zerona by Erchonia uses the LipoLASER to emulsify fat tissue which is then released into intercellular space. Excess fat is passed through the body during its normal course of detoxification. Since Zerona is a low level laser, it is relatively pain free with little to no downtime. Treatment takes 40 minutes and should be administered three times a week for two weeks for the best results. Completely noninvasive, Zerona is applied externally without incisions or injections. 4 - VASER Lipo: VASER Lipo from Sound Surgical Technologies LLC, utilizes ultrasonic energy to emulsify unwanted fat. Tissue selective, ultrasound energy precisely targets fat deposits, leaving surrounding tissue largely undisturbed. During the procedure, a thin probe that emits ultrasound waves is inserted into a tiny incision in the treatment area. Fat liquefies and is then removed with suction and/or massage. Ideal for delicate areas such as the inner thighs, chin or neck, VASER is also excellent for contouring highly defined muscles. 5 - LipoLite: From the creators of VelaShape, LipoLite is the newest laser to join the Syneron family. A tiny incision is created at the treatment area into which a precise and powerful laser beam liquefies fat cell deposits. Often used in conjunction with other traditional body contouring procedures such as liposuction, LipoLite can treat smaller problem areas that liposuction cannot. Treatment generally is an hour per area and recovery time is two days.
