Chemical Peels Are Not DIY Recommended

Doing it yourself may save money in the short term, but the damage it can cause will last a lot longer than the potential damage to your wallet from seeing a professional.

Chemical peels are a great treatment for clearing up your fine lines and wrinkles, evening out skin tone, and providing a bit of skin tightening. It is very safe when performed by a trained professional but it isn't recommended as a DIY procedure.

Dr. Drew Ordon discusses the importance of seeing a physician for chemical peels on today's episode of The Doctors. If you do choose to perform a peel on yourself at home, there are a few Don'ts to consider:

  • Dark or Medium Dark Skin - if the acid is not applied evenly, chemical peels can cause skin discoloration which is intensified in those with darker skin.

  • Over 8% Acid - there are different levels of acidity available in chemical peels for different penetration and results. Do not use a solution stronger than 8% acid at home - acid is very dangerous and can easily cause permanent scarring.

  • Acne Medication - if you are on any acne medication, you should not use a chemical peel. Skin is already more sensitive than usual on these meds and a chemical peel may cause serious skin damage.

  • Sun Exposure - Dr. Ordon recommends avoiding the sun six weeks before and six weeks after. UV rays damage the skin and a chemical peel can intensify this damage.

  • History of cold sores - The growth of new skin will often bring about a severe flare up in those prone to cold sores so if you get them, do not perform a chemical peel on yourself.

When done right, a chemical peel is very safe. But it is exactly what it sounds like - chemicals. Most of us interested in chemical peels have a lot of years between us and our last chemistry class, not to mention that we lack the training, so leave the acid alone and see a professional.
