Beauty Tech Review: Laser Lipo Devices - LipoTherme
American Health and Beauty has worked in conjunction with Aesthetic Trends and Technologies magazine to bring you the most information about laser lipolysis through doctor interviews. This segment is part 3 of an ongoing laser lipo round table series.
We spoke with Dr. Dwight Reynolds, a cosmetic surgeon in Ft. Lauderdale, FL about LipoTherme, a method of laser lipo. Dr. Reynolds has been performing liposuction procedures for 17 years and is familiar with multiple lipolysis methods. He likes using LipoTherme for the benefits it offers his practice and his patients.Laser lipo uses a laser to melt the fat before it is removed. "There are a number of different wavelengths out there, and I've been fortunate to have dealt with about 80% of the lasers." Dr. Reynolds was one of the first to work with SmartLipo technology and has trained physicians on liposuction methods for years. He says that it's important to understand something about the wavelengths because they make a big difference in the results. "SmartLipo used the 1064nm wavelength, which is good for superficial fat and for skin tightening, but that was about it." Later SmartLipo machines offered more and more powerful wavelengths, to the point that they were too powerful and melted fat too quickly, which Dr. Reynolds felt were beginning to threaten patient safety. Dr. Reynolds began looking more closely at wavelengths and examining which would be the best to both melt the fat and maintain the safety of the patient. He consulted with scientists at MIT regarding which wavelength was best, "across the board, it was the 980nm." That's when he decided to try the LipoTherme 980nm unit. "It deals with deep fat, mid-layer fat, and superficial fat - and skin tightening."  Actual LipoTherme results of Dr. Dwight Reynolds Patients do not have to be put asleep for this procedure, rather they are able to stay awake and only local anesthesia is needed. Dr. Reynolds is able to use LipoTherme on a wide range of patients, most of which are women, "anywhere from 18 to 80." The doctor has also found this useful as a weight loss method. He says that if you're able to bring a woman who wears a size 28 down to a size 18, that woman will begin to be more sociable and begin to feel better about herself, jumpstarting her weight loss program. The LipoTherme can be used in many places on the body, and not just for liposuction. Dr. Reynolds has used it for laser vaginal rejuvenation and blepharoplasty thanks to LipoTherme's pulsating wavelength which brings the energy level down. Thanks to the ability to increase and decrease power usage, both difficult and delicate areas can be treated. He says that he can treat fat that's up to about 2-3 inches deep. "You can treat most patients with the LipoTherme unit," says Dr. Reynolds. How much does LipoTherme cost? Dr. Reynolds typically charges between $4500-$6500.  Dr. Dwight Reynolds Dr. Dwight C. Dr. Reynolds' training is in General Surgery from the Cleveland Clinic foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. He has been in private practice and board certified in emergency medicine in Southeast Florida since 1985. He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Association of Aesthetic Medicine & Surgery and the International Meso-Lipotherapy Society.
