Mesotherapy - An Effective Alternative To Blepharoplasty

The study “Is Mesotherapy Effective in the Treatment of Lower Eyelid Fat Herniation?” was presented Sunday, Sept. 25, at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Conference in Chicago.

According to Rod Rohrich, MD, former president of ASPS and co-chair of the ASPS Committee on Emerging Trends, “Some of the newest plastic surgery techniques, while still in the experimental phase, may prove to be a viable alternative to having surgery.” Dr. Rohrich is referring to mesotherapy, which has met with controversy among many physicians of all specialties who are familiar with the procedure.

As a substitute for blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery, where fat is manually removed, one study investigated whether mesotherapy could be used to alleviate the puffiness and bulging associated with lower eyelid fat. Results showed that 90 percent of the patients reported an improvement in their lower eyelids, although only 62 percent of physicians noted a difference. Good results have only occurred in patients who do not require the removal of excess skin in the eye area. “Many of my patients are younger and do not need complete eye surgery,” said A.
