Can Modern Cosmetic Dentistry Transform Your Smile?

With the aid of dental crowns, implants and veneers, you can transform your mouth and have a bright and beautiful new smile.

One of the main focal points on the face, the mouth is often in the spotlight when it comes to wrinkles, lines and plumpness of lips. There are a myriad of facial fillers that can help with those external issues but an often overlooked aspect of the mouth is the teeth. There are 43 muscles in the face and while it is disputed how many are needed to smile, one thing is for certain, if you are uncomfortable with the way your teeth look, you probably smile a lot less.

As recently seen on The Doctors, a smile can be completely transformed with the aid of innovative dentistry procedures that include the use of dental crowns, implants and veneers. A patient who visited the set of The Doctors had a history of abusive relationships and sought to heal her external scars, including her chipped and missing teeth. Los Angeles cosmetic dentist Dr. Bill Dorfman performed a series of transformative procedures to give the patient a beautiful new smile, thus restoring her confidence and willingness to smile.

Often, in repairing chipped or missing teeth, surrounding teeth have to be taken into consideration as well. The following procedures may be performed individually or a combination may be necessary to get the best results.
  1. Dental Implants

Not only are missing teeth unsightly, they can seriously impair important functions such as chewing and eating. Dental implants are now available that can provide natural looking teeth that are permanent and secure. Considered a surgical procedure, dental implants require several steps for final results. An anchor and post are first surgically implanted in the gums. The artificial tooth is then securely attached to the post for a permanent dental implant. It may take several months in between steps, depending on healing time and fit.

  2. Dental Crowns

Dental crowns or caps can be used to fix badly chipped or discolored teeth. Porcelain dental crowns offer a natural looking option that are also strong. Different shades are available: your dentist will help you pick the shade closest to your surrounding teeth. Typically used for patients that have weakened teeth, a dental crown is also a good option for badly chipped teeth. The existing tooth is buffed down to create a natural post and a dental crown is created to fit exactly over the post, down to the gum-line - covering the entire tooth. A strong cement is used so the dental crown does not become dislodged and the crown acts as a normal tooth would.

  3. Veneers

For teeth that are not badly chipped or stained, a dental veneer may be a good option as opposed to a dental crown. An instantaneous change to your smile, one type of veneer available are DaVinci Veneers. Also made from porcelain, the DaVinci veneers are bonded to existing teeth without having to shave the existing tooth down, as is necessary in the dental crown process. Veneers may be used to change the shape, spacing, size or color of natural teeth. The procedure is quick and application of the veneers takes only a few minutes.

These procedures require pre and post procedural appointments to ensure the best fit and results possible. During your consultation with your dentist, he or she will discuss the best way to fix your teeth to achieve the most beautiful and bright smile possible.
