Restylane & Botox - A Personal Experience With Injectable Fillers
I have been getting fillers injected into my nasolabial folds since I was about 30 years old. At first, I went to a young dermatologist on the Upper East Side in Manhattan who would inject – without any anesthesia – collagen into them. The procedure was very quick and simple; he took a fine needle and made numerous small injections of collagen into the lines between my nose and mouth.
As he worked, a tear would roll down my cheek. The pain was considerable but bearable since I knew that in a few minutes, I would have a smooth, crease-free face. For a few hours afterwards, my lower face would look a bit puffy and sometimes dots of blood marked the injection points. When I first started doing this, I would hail a cab quickly and self-consciously as soon as I exited from his practice. Eventually, I got over it and walked home to my apartment on East 55th Street. If anyone looked at me strangely, I didn’t notice; it was Manhattan, after all, and you need to do quite a bit more than have a few needle marks on your face to merit attention! As I was quite young then, I sometimes wondered if it was really worth spending the $400-500 every 6 months. Perhaps, I thought, I was being a little obsessive and my folds were really not affecting my features. However, whenever I would see my father shortly after getting them done – and of course I told no one about it, I admitted to it only recently, ten years later – he would look up from his newspaper and exclaim, “Honey, you look great! So rested!” What is that line in the movie The Birdcage? “If you look tired, it means you look old. If you look rested, it means you’ve had collagen.” Needless to say, I have continued to regularly get fillers injected (from collagen I graduated to Restylane and Perlane and now Botox for my forehead) for 10 years. I even have my top lip filled a bit nowadays and believe me, you do NOT want to have your lip injected without some kind of numbing. (There is a reason human beings like kissing so much – lots of nerve endings in lips!) I am currently on hiatus as I am nursing my 4-month old son. But you can be sure that when he transitions to food, I will be making my appointment!
