A breast lift can be a highly beneficial procedure for patients concerned with sagging or tired-looking breasts. Many women who undergo significant weight loss choose to have a breast lift for their self-confidence and body image. Nursing, gravity, and age can take a tremendous toll on the appearance of the breasts. Youthful, firmer breasts positioned higher on the body can change one's entire look.

Breast lift, also known medically as mastopexy, is best for women who are realistic about what the surgery can accomplish. Women with smaller breasts see the benefits of the lift for longer than those with larger breasts. If you are planning to have more children, it is probably best to wait to have a breast lift. Pregnancy following breast lift may stretch the skin further and negate the positive effects of the surgery.

During your consultation, your doctor will examine and measure your breast to make recommendations for s positive outcome. Some patients are asked to undergo a mammogram prior to surgery. To minimize risk, if you are a smoker you will need to stop for several weeks before your breast lift. There may also be some temporary dietary restrictions for you to follow. Be sure to tell your doctor about any medications you are taking or prior surgeries you have had.

The breast tissue is repositioned higher, excess skin is removed, and the nipple is relocated. Some scarring is possible but can be tremendously minimized with the skill of a good plastic surgeon. Mastopexy does leave permanent scars, but the scars should be positioned in a way that your bra or swimsuit can hide them. Some patients lose sensation in their breasts or nipples, although feeling may eventually return.

Breast lift is usually performed under general anesthesia, meaning that you will sleep through the surgery. It is possible that some patients undergo breast lift under local anesthesia, but only when there are a few small incisions to be made. The procedure can last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

There are always some complications with any surgery that a patient should be aware of before committing to a procedure. With breast lift, common reactions include bleeding and infection, or reaction to anesthesia. The most important concern with breast lift is scar care and you should discuss these issues with your surgeon.
