When arms are held at a 90 degree angle, any stretched or loose skin in the tricep area can result in a droopy "bat-wing" appearance. An incision is made in the underarm to the elbow to allow reshaping of the arm and elimination of extra skin.

Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift or arm lipectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove skin and fat from the upper arm, reducing skin redundancy that makes clothing fit improperly or makes you feel uncomfortable in short sleeves or sleeveless tops.

Brachioplasty arm lift surgery can markedly improve the appearance of your arms. The combined effects of aging, gravity, fluctuations in weight, and a loss of skin elasticity all contribute to a loss of tone in the arms with age.

The incisions required for an arm lift are determined by the severity of your condition. Minimal skin excess may be treated with an incision in the armpit alone. Moderate laxity is treated with an incision from the armpit to the elbow. Most patients fall into this category. More severe cases are rare and may require extension of the incision past the elbow onto the forearm.

If you are planning or anticipate a significant loss of weight in the future, it is probably best to postpone your arm lift until after this has occurred to optimize your results. No one wants bat arms or the granny swing. In addition to the surgical procedure, there is also a nonsurgical arm lift procedure available using either Body Thermage or Titan Skin tightening lasers.

Following arm lift surgery, many patients experience an immediate improvement in their self-esteem and discover a greater self-confidence. In addition, many also find greater access to different clothing styles and fashions and are less self-conscious at the gym, around the pool, or at the beach.

If you think you might be a good candidate for an arm lift, this page will give you a basic understanding of the procedure and the results you can expect.
