 Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginal Rejuvenation techniques & treatments may include the following procedures:

After childbirth, or as a woman grows older, changes might occur within her vagina. It might feel different to her or her partner during intercourse, and might look different externally. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery can be an option for women experiencing these vaginal changes.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery

A one to two hour outpatient procedure, called posterior repair or vaginoplasty, will reduce internal vaginal mucosa, which tightens the canal. This can help increase muscle tone, control and strength, and potentially increase pleasurable friction during intercourse.

After vaginal rejuvenation surgery, a patient can walk within a few days and can return to sexual activity in four to six weeks. It is important to remember that vaginal rejuvenation surgery cannot cure sexual dysfunction or increase desire. This surgery may not be covered by insurance, and complications such as bleeding or scarring are possible.

Labia Reduction and/or Labiaplasty

Some women are unhappy with the appearance of their external genitalia. Aging, childbirth and injury can alter the size and shape of the labia majora and minor, or outer and inner lips of the vulva. In some cases the labia may become irritated by clothing or even be visible through garments.

Today surgeons can remove excess tissue from the labia majora and minora with a laser labioplasty. This procedure reduces the length of the tissue as well as making uneven labia equal in size. Usually a short outpatient procedure done under general anesthesia, labioplasty has a short recovery time.

Labioplasty may not be covered by insurance, but most surgeons offer payment plans. The surgery can be done concurrently with other genital, facial or plastic surgery elsewhere on the body.

Perineoplasty

Especially after giving birth, some women experience weakness in their perineum, the region between the vaginal opening, or introitus, and the anus. Often the superficial transverse perineal muscle is damaged. This can affect sensation as well as the external appearance of the vaginal canal, which may seem gaping or loose.

A perineoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps to strengthen the perineal muscles. Some physicians use a new technique that uses a laser verses traditional surgery. This will reduce the size of the vaginal opening and improve the appearance of the labia majora and minora. Confidence and sexual sensation may improve after this surgery.

As with all surgery, perineoplasty is a procedure that may have side effects and complications. It is also unable to cure sexual dysfunction, and may not be covered by insurance.

Hymenoplasty

The hymen is a thin membrane enclosing the vagina, allowing menstrual flow to pass through. Through use of tampons, physical activity and sexual intercourse the hymen can be broken.

A hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure that replicates the natural hymen membrane. During the surgery the epithelial layer that has grown over the remaining hymen tissue is removed. If none remains, the surgeon can free a small strip of the vaginal mucosa to reattach in a circular fashion. The reattachment of the hymen results in constriction and bleeding once intercourse occurs for the first time after the surgery.

Hymenoplasty surgery is relatively quick and done under a local anesthetic. It usually requires six weeks of recovery time. Some women are having this surgery as a way to celebrate an anniversary with their spouse, while others might have cultural or religious reasons to do so.

Stress Urinary Incontinence

Many women experience stress urinary incontinence as they grow older, gain weight, or give birth. Depending on its severity, coughing, sneezing, laughter or exercise may cause leakage of urine.

There are several causes of stress urinary incontinence. In some cases the urethral sphincter may become weak, allowing urine to leak. Injury, abdominal surgery or a chronic coughing disorder may put enough pressure on the bladder to cause leakage problems. Pelvic prolapse is caused when weak muscles allow the organs to move and press against the vaginal canal. If the bladder is prolapsed this can also lead to incontinence.

There are dietary, pharmaceutical and physical means to assist with stress urinary incontinence, which should be discussed with your doctor. In the case of bladder prolapse, or cystocele, laser corrective surgery is available. During surgery, the bladder is moved into its correct position and affixed to muscle, ligament or bone with a string or sling. An artificial sphincter around the urethra may be utilized as well.

G Spot Amplification

The G-spot, named in honor of Dr. Ernst Grafenberg, is a small, cushiony area on the anterior wall of the vagina. Dr. Grafenberg and others claim that this area, when stimulated, can lead to increased sexual pleasure. Some experts remain unconvinced that the G-spot exists, however.

A new, non-surgical technique has been developed to temporarily enlarge the G-spot, in order to potentially increase sexual pleasure and orgasms. Dr. David Matlock invented and patented The G-Shot®, which achieves these results with a collagen injection.

The procedure is relatively simple and nearly painless. First, the patient assists the physician in locating her G-spot. This position is measured and recorded for future use. A topical anesthetic is applied to the vaginal wall, where a three and one half inch long needle administers the human collagen into the G-spot. This causes the G-spot to expand to the size of a quarter, but does not inhibit sexual activity or the use of tampons.

After four months, the collagen is harmlessly absorbed into the body. As with other cosmetic genital procedures, the G-Shot cannot cure sexual dysfunction, and some side effects can occur.

Rejuvenation of the Mons Pubis

With weight gain or weight loss, childbirth and the passage of time, the pubic mound, or mons pubis, can sag or bulge. This can result in an unattractive appearance when naked or wearing clothing. Sagging of the mons pubis can also make clitoral stimulation difficult.

Cosmetic surgeons can now remove excess fat from the pubic mound. Using local and sedated or general anesthesia, the thirty to sixty minute procedure lifts the mons. Sometimes liposuction is used to remove excess fat tissue. The procedure results in a scar hidden in the pubic hair. Mons pubis rejuvenation flattens and lifts the pubic area. Another side effect can be increased clitoral exposure, which can aid in sexual stimulation.

Mons pubis surgery has a short recovery period, and can be easily combined with genital or abdominal cosmetic surgery.

Augmentation Labiaplasty

As women turn their attention to beauty of the whole body, genital alteration becomes an option. While some feel aspects of their genitalia are too large, for example, long labia majora, or vulvar lips, others feel their labia are too small or thin.

To improve appearance and possibly sexual fulfillment, cosmetic surgeons can inject the labia with extracted body fat. This technique can also be used to increase the size of one side of the labia if the other side is smaller.

Labial augmentation is less invasive than other genital surgeries, and can easily be combined with other procedures.

Reduction of Excess Prepuce

Aging, weight loss or weight gain and childbirth can all change the appearance of a woman's external genitalia. These changes can effect the vaginal vault itself, the labia minora and majora and even the tissue around the clitoris, called the prepuce, or hood.

Cosmetic surgery is now available to sculpt the prepuce area. This can improve the appearance of the hood, as well as allowing for better access sexually. Because the clitoris is such a sensitive area, care must be taken not to remove too much prepuce.

Reduction of excess prepuce surgery can easily be combined with plastic surgery of the body or face, or other genital rejuvenation treatments.
