Traditional LASIK surgery can provide excellent results for most people in correcting common vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. These are referred to as “lower order aberrations.” The term “higher order aberrations” refers to a wide range of common vision problems associated with visual quality, usually apparent in low-light situations or at night with problems like glare and halos. Some patients with higher order aberrations who were not candidates for traditional LASIK eye surgery can benefit from custom LASIK surgery using CustomCornea®.

CustomCornea® is a new kind of LASIK procedure to go beyond reshaping your cornea based solely on your prescription for eyeglasses or contacts. The procedure is completely customized to your eyes and your eyes alone. In addition, CustomCornea® can help with other vision problems that could not be detected previously, known as higher order aberrations. Experts believe these aberrations can be responsible for vision problems like glare and halos in low-light conditions and at night.

Higher order aberrations cannot be treated by traditional laser vision correction procedures, or even by wearing glasses or contacts. CustomCornea® was the first laser vision correction procedure that's FDA approved to address higher order aberrations.

Custom LASIK with CustomCornea® is only truly customized laser vision procedure available and represents an amazing breakthrough in laser vision correction. CustomCornea® is unique in that it is the only technology able to use a wavefront diagnostic to guide an excimer laser during the laser vision correction procedure.

In order for your doctor to have the most detailed information about the shape of your eyes, he or she will utilize the technology known as the LADARWave™ CustomCornea® Wavefront System. A narrow ray of eye-safe light will pass through the eye, plotting a topographical map of the surface of your eye. These patterns are then compared with other diagnostic information collected by your ophthalmologist. The CustomCornea® Wavefront System is used to measure distortions in your eye's entire optical system, allowing for correction of both lower and higher order aberrations and improving both visual acuity and visual quality.

Until CustomCornea®, it was not possible to correct higher order aberrations. Traditional vision correction or conventional laser vision correction only allows for correction of 85-90% of the imperfections in the eye. CustomCornea® removes the other 10-15% of the optical imperfections in your eye, not just allowing for better vision than has ever been possible before, but greatly improving the quality of your lifestyle.

The LADARVision® 4000 Excimer Laser System and the LADARWave™ CustomCornea® Wavefront System computer-match the wavefront image of your eye and transform it into a customized profile to guide treatment by the laser. This is the great benefit of this technology, the ability to guide the laser with extreme precision.
