CoolSculpting by Zeltiq Facts

  • Uses cryolipolysis cold therapy aka CoolSculpting
  • Causes fat cells to crystallize and die

What Is Coolsculpting? CoolSculpting is an FDA approved technology that uses cold therapy to freeze and destroy fat cells, with no surgery required. It is also called cryolipolysis and is a pain free method to rid yourself of fat in specific areas.

How Does Coolsculpting Work? CoolSculpting by Zeltiq uses precisely controlled, targeted cold therapy in a treatment that lasts about one hour per treatment area. The skin to be treated is suctioned between two cooling plates which modify the fat's temperature to just above freezing. Energy is extracted from the fat cell by the cold, causing it to die. Though it is referred to as cryolipolysis, it is not actually "freezing" the fat or the surrounding tissues. Rather, it crystallizes the lipids in fat cells causing the slow collapse of cells as they die. The procedure targets only fat cells and only those in the superficial fat layer close to the skin. The body then carries off the dead cells over the course of two to three months for a more gradual, natural result.

What Are The Risks Of Coolsculpting? Coolsculpting by Zeltiq received FDA clearance for the non-invasive reduction of fat in September of 2010. The results appear to be long lasting and testing has shown no increase in blood lipids or blood cholesterol. It takes several weeks for the fat to be expelled. The most common side effects reported about CoolSculpting include stinging pain or a needle sensation at the treatment site. Post treatment pain usually goes goes away on its own in less than 10 days. Some patients also describe aching, redness, bruising, swelling and skin sensitivity at the treatment area. Some patients end up with indentations the size of the applicator. This complication has been termed "shark bites". Most times the indentation will smooth out over a 3 month period. If not, the area can be smoothed out using many different "heat sourced" body contouring technologies like Vanquish, Venus Legacy, Velashape or liposuction. A rare side effect that has occurred in a small percentage of patients, usually men is called Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH). With PAH instead of the fat cell dying, it actually increases in size and hardens. Just losing weight will not get rid of the problem areas, neither will treating them with a different non-invasive procedure. PAH is typically treated with liposuction.

How Much Does Coolsculpting Cost? Treatments take about between 35 minutes and an hour, depending on the area treated and the CoolSculpting model used. The average cost of CoolSculpting is $2,183 based on our surveys. Small applicator rates are lower.

CoolSculpting BMI Many patients ask how high of a BMI can CoolSculpting treat. It's important to note that CoolSculpting can only freeze the fat that can be pulled into the applicator. Many people have visceral body fat that is behind the muscle wall, this fat can not be pulled into the applicator and therefore can not be treated. A general rule is if you can pinch it, CoolSculpting can treat it for abdomen, back, bra fat, flank, chin, thighs, and upper arms. It is recommended that your BMI is under 30. Although this isn't an absolute requirement, if your BMI is over 30 you may not appreciate the results and should consider a different procedure that isn't "spot fat removal" like Vanquish. zeltiq before and after
